On January 16, 2026, the Northeast Nebraska Adult Drug Court held a graduation ceremony at the Madison County Courthouse for one participant. The event was presided over by Judge Mark Johnson. Retired District Court Judge James Kube, who had overseen most of the graduate’s hearings during their participation in the program, also attended.
The ceremony marked the end of an intensive program that includes behavioral health treatment, community supervision, and a focus on personal accountability. Drug courts provide an alternative to traditional criminal justice proceedings for nonviolent offenders with substance use disorders. They use a collaborative approach among court staff and service providers to address addiction and reduce repeat offenses.
According to organizers, “Graduation marks the successful completion of a rigorous, structured program that combines comprehensive behavioral health treatment, intensive community supervision, and a strong emphasis on personal accountability.”
Drug courts aim to improve public safety and support long-term recovery by employing practices such as risk assessments, individualized treatment plans, random drug testing, and systems of incentives and sanctions. Participants can access various rehabilitative services intended to help them achieve stability and productivity.
“The mission of drug courts is to reduce repeat offenses, enhance public safety, and support long-term recovery. These goals are achieved through evidence-based practices, including validated risk and needs assessments, individualized treatment plans, frequent and random drug testing, and a structured system of incentives and sanctions. Participants also have access to a wide range of rehabilitative and supportive services designed to help them build stable, healthy, and productive lives,” organizers said.
